Call Us First, No Judgment

When you call, expect the front desk to ask a few short questions: when the pain started, how bad it is on a 1-to-10 scale, if swelling is involved, if the tooth has changed color, and if you have insurance. That is it. Nobody asks how long it has been since your last cleaning. Nobody comments on why you waited to call. If you have not been to a dentist in years, mention it once and we adjust the appointment length to give Dr. Pickwick more time with you. That is the entire adjustment: no lecture, no side conversation among staff.

Once you arrive, the same principle applies. Dr. Pickwick handles the immediate emergency first. Anything else she finds in your mouth gets documented but not treated during the emergency visit unless you specifically ask. Your call. Everything else is a conversation for another appointment, if and when you are ready to have it.

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Pain-driven emergencies: severe toothache, sensitivity so intense you cannot eat, abscess or gum swelling with or without fever. Trauma-driven emergencies: knocked-out teeth (avulsions), chipped or fractured teeth, lost fillings or crowns, injuries to the tongue or lips, tooth pushed out of position by trauma without being fully dislodged.

Emergencies that go to a hospital ER rather than to our office: any dental issue with difficulty breathing or swallowing, facial swelling affecting your vision, uncontrollable bleeding, high fever combined with dental symptoms, head trauma from an accident. The front desk will tell you honestly if what you describe belongs at Northside Hospital Gwinnett or Piedmont Eastside rather than at our chair. That call is a safety judgment, not a scheduling one.

Dr. Pickwick treats emergency cases across every category above, plus the follow-up work that emergency treatment requires: root canals, crowns for cracked teeth, extractions when a tooth cannot be saved, and sedation for patients too anxious to sit through even brief procedures.

Immediate Steps While You Are on the Phone With Us

Toothache: warm salt water rinse, ibuprofen if your medical history allows it, cold compress on the outside of your cheek. Never place aspirin against the tooth or gums; it burns tissue.

Knocked-out permanent tooth: hold the tooth by the white crown, not the root. Rinse briefly with milk or saliva if dirty. Skip tap water. Store in milk or saliva, get to us within an hour if possible.

Broken tooth: rinse, save fragments in a container of milk, cover sharp edges with orthodontic wax or sugar-free gum until you arrive.

Lost filling or crown: cover the cavity with sugar-free gum or temporary dental cement from a pharmacy. Save the crown if you have it.

Swelling in the face or jaw: cold compress outside, warm salt water rinses inside, come in same-day. Untreated abscesses can spread to serious infection.
