My tooth is aching but not throbbing. Is that a real dental emergency?

Possibly. Mild aches sometimes resolve on their own, and sometimes signal the start of a nerve or infection issue. If the ache has lasted more than 24 hours or is interfering with eating or sleeping, treat it as an emergency and call. If it just started and is not disrupting daily activities, next-day scheduling is usually appropriate.

My teenager cracked a molar on a chicken bone last night. Is that an emergency or can it wait?

Depends on symptoms. Cracks with visible pink or red at the fracture line usually reach the nerve and need same-day care. Cracks without pain or visible nerve exposure often can wait 24 to 48 hours, but book quickly because chewing on a cracked tooth can drive the crack deeper. Call and describe what you see; Dr. Pickwick will tell you honestly which category yours falls into.

I have swelling in my cheek from a bad tooth. Should I go to the ER or call you?

Both matter. Mild swelling that responds to a cold compress is a dental emergency and belongs at our office same-day. Significant swelling that changes the shape of your face, affects your vision, or spreads toward your neck is a medical emergency and belongs at Northside Hospital Gwinnett or Piedmont Eastside. Fever with the swelling pushes the answer toward the ER. When in doubt, err toward the hospital.

My filling fell out this morning and there is no pain. Do I need same-day treatment?

Usually not same-day, but same-week. Cover the exposed cavity with sugar-free gum or over-the-counter dental cement to keep food out, and call to schedule within a few days. If sharp edges are cutting your tongue or cheek, come in sooner.

Is bleeding gums after brushing a dental emergency?

Almost never. Mild bleeding usually points to early gum inflammation called gingivitis, which is treatable with a professional cleaning and better home care. Book a regular appointment. Bleeding that will not stop with pressure, or bleeding accompanied by facial swelling or fever, is different: that goes to same-day care.

Porcelain veneers get sold hard online, and the pitch usually skips the part where you find out if they are actually right for you. Not every set of teeth is a veneer candidate, and not every cosmetic concern needs veneers to fix. Who Porcelain Veneers Actually Work For

Veneers are thin porcelain or composite shells bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They change the color, shape, size, or alignment of what shows when you smile. That specific list matters. Veneers change appearance. They do not repair structural damage below the surface, and they do not fix issues that affect how your teeth function together.

The strongest candidates share a few characteristics. Teeth are essentially healthy. Gums are stable, without active periodontal disease. Enough natural tooth enamel exists to bond porcelain onto (most patients have this; some do not). The bite is reasonably aligned. Cosmetic concerns fall into the category veneers actually address: chipped or cracked front teeth, permanent staining that whitening cannot remove, small gaps between teeth, teeth that are slightly too small or oddly shaped for the smile line, or teeth that are minorly rotated.

Age matters less than expected. Adults from their early 20s through their 70s become veneer patients regularly. Jaw and bone development is the constraint on younger patients; most dentists prefer to wait until permanent teeth have fully settled, typically by age 18. Older adults who take reasonable care of their teeth remain candidates through their retirement years.

The Enamel Question

Enamel matters because porcelain veneers bond to enamel more reliably than to underlying dentin. Adults who have worn down their front-tooth enamel through years of acid reflux, chronic use of acidic sports drinks, or aggressive brushing may have less enamel than a veneer procedure ideally wants.

The assessment happens during the initial consultation. Dr. Pickwick evaluates enamel thickness through visual examination and digital X-rays. If enamel is marginal, several options exist: composite veneers, which are more forgiving of variable bonding surfaces; no-prep or minimal-prep porcelain veneers, which preserve more of the natural tooth; or an alternative approach entirely. The consultation is diagnostic, not a sales appointment. If the veneer path does not fit your specific mouth, Dr. Pickwick will say so and offer alternatives.

What the Veneer Process Looks Like

Porcelain veneers involve two appointments spaced about two to three weeks apart. The first appointment includes preparation of the tooth surface (a small amount of enamel is shaped to make room for the veneer), an impression sent to the dental lab, and temporary veneers placed to protect the teeth while the permanent ones are being made.

Two to three weeks later, the permanent veneers arrive from the lab. Dr. Pickwick removes the temporaries, tries the permanent veneers in for fit and color, makes any adjustments needed, and bonds them in place with a light-cured resin cement. Composite veneers work differently. They are built up chairside in one appointment using resin material shaped and cured directly on the tooth. Faster and cheaper than porcelain, but less durable and more prone to staining over time.

My teenager wants veneers before college. Is 17 too young?

A: Usually yes. Bone development in the jaw continues into the late teens and early 20s, and veneers placed before development finishes may not sit correctly on adult teeth. Dr. Pickwick generally recommends waiting until at least 18 and reevaluating the concern at that point. Composite bonding can address most teenage cosmetic concerns as an interim step without permanently altering the tooth.

I grind my teeth at night. Am I a candidate for porcelain veneers?

A: Only after the grinding is addressed. Porcelain veneers on an untreated grinder often crack within months. If a night guard, occlusal adjustment, or other intervention brings the grinding under control, veneers become a reasonable option. Dr. Pickwick evaluates wear patterns during the consultation to gauge severity.

Can I get veneers if I already have a few crowns from previous work?

A: Yes, though the treatment plan gets more nuanced. Existing crowns can be color-matched to new veneers, or the crowns can be replaced at the same time to guarantee a uniform look across the smile. The consultation covers both paths so you can decide based on cost and appearance goals.

My tooth enamel is thin from years of acid reflux. Does that rule out veneers?

A: Not always. Thin enamel makes the assessment more careful, but composite veneers, no-prep porcelain options, or partial coverage restorations may still work. Some patients with severely worn enamel are better served by crowns than by veneers. The consultation determines which category your teeth fall into.

I have had gum issues in the past. Will you still consider me for veneers?

A: Yes, if the gum condition is under control. Active periodontal disease has to be treated and stabilized before veneers are placed, because gum recession after placement exposes the veneer margin and produces a visible dark line. Dr. Pickwick evaluates gum health during the consultation and may recommend periodontal treatment first.
