Same-day availability comes from how we hold the schedule, not from luck. Every business day, the office reserves a block of unscheduled time called an emergency window that never gets booked in advance. When a Dacula patient calls at 10 AM with a broken molar, the call goes into that window. Wednesday hours start at 7 AM, so an emergency that woke you at 3 AM can often be seen before your morning meeting starts. Monday and Tuesday run to 5 PM. Thursday closes at 4 PM. One Friday each month the office opens 8 AM to 1 PM; call to check which Friday.

For patients driving in from Hamilton Mill or the newer subdivisions filling in along Highway 316, the drive to our door runs straight south: Dacula Road to Lawrenceville, then Grayson Highway toward Grayson. No highway merges, no downtown Snellville retail crawl. From Mulberry, the same route applies with a slightly shorter start. If you have young kids at home, mention it when you call and we work the appointment around childcare rather than forcing you to bring them into the operatory. What to Do Right Now Before You Arrive

The first minutes after a dental emergency often decide the outcome. A few specific steps make a real difference before you leave the house.

For a toothache: rinse with warm salt water, one teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of warm water. Floss gently to dislodge trapped food. Take ibuprofen if your medical history allows it. Never place aspirin directly against the tooth or gum tissue; it causes chemical burns on contact. A cold compress against the outside of your cheek helps reduce swelling.

For a knocked-out permanent tooth: this one runs on a clock. Hold the tooth by the crown (the white chewing part), never by the root. Rinse briefly with milk or saliva if it is dirty. Skip tap water, since chlorine damages the root cells needed for replantation. Store the tooth in milk, in a container of your own saliva, or in a Save-a-Tooth kit from any pharmacy. Get to our office within an hour if you can. Replantation success drops steeply after 60 minutes.

For a chipped or fractured tooth: rinse with warm water, save any fragments in a container of milk, and cover any sharp edges with orthodontic wax, sugar-free gum, or a small piece of gauze so you do not cut your tongue on the drive.

For a lost filling or crown: keep the crown if you have it. Cover the exposed cavity with sugar-free gum or over-the-counter temporary dental cement from any pharmacy. This protects the tooth until you arrive.

The First 30 Minutes After You Arrive

Walk in and tell the front desk what happened. They hear these stories in fragmented sentences all the time; do not worry about how well you describe it. They pull your chart if you are a returning patient or start a quick new patient record, take basic vitals, and move you into an operatory.

An assistant takes a focused digital X-ray of the involved area, usually one or two targeted images rather than a full-mouth series. Dr. Pickwick examines the specific tooth or tissue causing the problem and reviews the X-ray with you on a screen. Within 20 to 30 minutes of walking in, you have a diagnosis and a treatment plan in plain language.

If the immediate need is pain relief, numbing happens first. If infection is involved, antibiotics get prescribed and treatment gets scheduled to follow once the swelling reduces. Dental infection makes anesthesia less effective, so waiting a day or two often produces a better outcome for definitive treatment. If the tooth needs immediate repair (a temporary crown, a splint for a loosened tooth, a filling to seal an exposed nerve), treatment happens the same visit when possible. You leave with written aftercare, prescriptions called into your preferred pharmacy, and any follow-up visits already scheduled.
